Online safety for people with learning disabilities. Staying safe online is more important than ever. For disabled individuals and their carers, this can feel like a daunting task, but with a few simple steps, you can confidently navigate the digital landscape. At Won Connect, we believe that everyone deserves to feel secure online, which is why we’re passionate about digital inclusion and literacy. Here are four essential tips to help you stay safe online:
1. Protect Your Personal Information
Think of your personal information as your online wallet. You wouldn’t leave it lying around, so don’t share your details carelessly. Always be cautious when asked for personal information, whether it’s your address, bank details, or passwords. Make sure you use strong, unique passwords for each of your accounts, and whenever possible, enable two-factor authentication (2FA). This adds an extra layer of security, making it much harder for someone to access your accounts.
2. Recognise Scams and Phishing
The internet is full of great opportunities, but unfortunately, there are also people trying to take advantage of others. Be on the lookout for suspicious emails or messages that seem too good to be true, or that create a sense of urgency. These are often phishing attempts designed to trick you into revealing personal information. A good rule of thumb? If an email looks even slightly off, don’t click on any links. Instead, go directly to the website yourself to verify if the message is legitimate.
3. Adjust Your Privacy Settings
Social media is a fantastic way to stay connected, but it’s important to be in control of what you share. Take a few minutes to review and update your privacy settings on all your social media platforms. You can decide who can see your posts, who can send you messages, and what information is visible to the public. Being proactive about your privacy settings gives you the power to manage your digital footprint.
4. Encourage Digital Literacy
The best defence against online threats is knowledge. By equipping yourself and those you care for with strong digital literacy skills, you’re building a foundation of confidence and safety. This includes understanding how to identify secure websites, managing your passwords effectively, and knowing what to do if you encounter a problem. At Won Connect, we’ve designed our fully accessible Digital Skills for Beginners course to empower you with exactly these skills.
