With the rapidly evolving situation regarding COVID-19 and the effect on individuals and communities, we thought it would be helpful to point people in the direction of free support and community initiatives from nonprofits and social enterprise in the area.
The below list is a summary of current Covid-19 community response across Greater Glasgow serving vulnerable groups and isolated individuals.
Some details may be subject to change but we aim to update this list as often as possible.

Mutual Aid Groups
Mutual aid group for people in Glasgow wishing to help others by providing food and other services to peers in need. Formed in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, their aim is to safely support those who are self-isolating, quarantined, or otherwise vulnerable.
Southside Self Isolation Support
Mutual aid Group aiming to help and support people through self-isolation or quarantine throughout the southside of Glasgow. A peer-to-peer support network providing community support through assistance with basic help such as shopping, community advocacy, and guidance towards existing organisations for additional support.
East End Self Isolation Support Group
Mutual aid Group aiming to help and support people through self-isolation or quarantine throughout Glasgow East End.
Williamwood Community Support aiming to help through a network of street volunteers and general advice and help.
Viral Kindness scotland (Scotland Wide)
Community-led response to the coronavirus outbreak, aiming to assist those in need, connect people across Scotland, and build a network of volunteers by providing a free connecting service between individual and local organisations.
Food delivery services
Non-profit religious organisation offering support and advice during the crisis but also emergency food parcel delivery for the vulnerables in Pollokshields, East Kilbride, Newlands, Scotstoun, Summerston, Dalmarnock, Knightswood, Castlemilk & Maryhill through their newly launched food bank.

Well-known social enterprise that has re-purposed to create a nationwide food delivery service in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. They are aiming to produce and deliver food and supplies to those who need them most for the duration of this outbreak such as homeless people, families that were relying on free school meals and those who have been made redundant due to the crisis and are in food poverty.

Award-winning community organisation located in Paisley and operating in Renfrewshire, providing one to one support and community fridge and pantry services during the crisis. Staff and Volunteers deliver food and hygiene products to individuals and families in need from Monday to Thursday between 9:30 and 5 by arrangement and dependent on supplies.

Grassroots charity operating in Easterhouse, which has taken on the role of a food bank during the coronavirus crisis, delivering provisions to self-isolating elderly people. They are open from 10am-4pm for emergency food hamper or information

Glasgow Central Mosque located in the city center provides support for the elderly and vulnerable with shopping, collecting medication, food parcels but also pick up and drop off services.

Other services
Glasgow charity located in Dumbarton provides essential baby items to families in need and is currently offering free Emergency Baby Packs for families facing financial hardship during the coronavirus outbreak. Requests and enquiry about an Emergency Baby Pack can be made between 10am – 12pm Wednesday to Saturday through a phone consultation with one of the organisation volunteers.

Helplines
- Government advice helpline 0800 111 4000 to assist with practical or emotional support from those without family help.
- For General advice: Age UK on Monday to Friday 9-5 on 0800 12 44 222 for information or just a chat.
- NHS 24 – If you are feeling unwell and need advice you can call NHS 24 on 111
- Glasgow’s Golden Generation telephone befriending system provides the elderly with social and emotional support networks. They are also delivering parcels to older people across Glasgow. Contact your nearest centre; Glasgow North/West 0141 353 0720, Glasgow South 0141 632 7391, Glasgow East 0141 766 0000 or you can call the Head Office on 0141 221 9924.
For essential shopping you can;
Sainsbury’s have a dedicated phone line for people to register as vulnerable. This is available on 0800 953 4988 however it may take a while to get through as the phone line is extremely busy.
They also have a specific elderly time between 8-9am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday serving elderly, disabled or vulnerable customers.
Lidl will open 1 hour earlier for elderly customers. Contact your local Lidl for their specific opening times as these vary.
Similarly, Iceland will open its supermarkets early for elderly customers to visit before stores open to the public. Each day, elderly shoppers can now visit between 8am – 9am to get their shopping first.
Waitrose currently have measures in place for the elderly, the vulnerable and those who look after them, with a prioritised and dedicated shopping hour every day. This is the first opening hour of the shop. Contact your local Waitrose store for specific opening hours as these vary.
Co-op announced that it will be offering priority shopping to the vulnerable and those who care for them from Monday to Saturday 8am – 9am and Sunday 10am – 11am.
Nisa stores are offering help to the elderly and vulnerable, by offering extended services to customers, including free deliveries.

If you can’t do your own shopping;
- You can call the British Red Cross on 0344 412 2804 they are a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are.
- Royal Voluntary Service deliver personal and practical support through the power of local volunteers to support older people. Visit their website or call 0330 555 0310.
Food Banks
Trussell Trust website shows there are 15 food banks in the Glasgow area.

Age UK has some important tips to keep you safe during this uncertainty.
Please remember,
- If someone claims to be from a recognised organisation, ask to see proof or check with the organisation itself.
- If someone you don’t know offers you help with your shopping don’t feel pressured to accept help. If you do accept help, never hand-over money, bank details or cards to someone you don’t know offering to help you.
- If someone offers to do your shopping, ask for a receipt so that you can pay them on their return to cover the costs of the items.
